A domestic Forever stamp is non-denominated postage that pays the current First-Class Mail one-ounce stamped-letter price when the mailpiece qualifies. Its value is 82¢ under the rate effective July 12, 2026, regardless of the price originally paid.
What “Forever” protects
A rate increase does not require you to add postage to an older genuine unused Forever stamp for the same eligible one-ounce letter service. The stamp follows the service value rather than a printed purchase price.
What one Forever stamp does not cover
- A letter over one ounce
- A square, rigid or otherwise nonmachinable letter
- An international letter or postcard
- A large envelope, package or different mail class
- Tracking, registration or another extra service
| Completed stamped letter | Postage effective July 12, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Up to 1 oz | $0.82 |
| Over 1 oz up to 2 oz | $1.11 |
| Over 2 oz up to 3 oz | $1.40 |
| Over 3 oz up to 3.5 oz | $1.69 |
Classify the finished mailpiece first
- Seal the actual contents inside the envelope.
- Measure length, height and thickness; weigh the completed piece.
- Check shape, aspect ratio, rigidity, clasps, uneven thickness and other nonmachinable features.
- Choose the correct mail class, destination and any extra service.
- Then meet the required dollar postage with valid unused stamps or another accepted payment method.
Forever stamp versus fixed value
A fixed 10¢, 32¢ or 44¢ stamp contributes exactly that printed amount. A domestic Forever stamp contributes the current applicable one-ounce letter value. Both must be genuine, unused and acceptable under USPS rules.
Should you buy extra stamps?
Buy according to realistic mailing needs, preferred designs, seller reliability and storage conditions. A future rate change can increase a Forever stamp’s postal use value, but stamps are not a guaranteed investment and the resale market is separate from postage.
