What a precanceled stamp means
Precanceled stamps are produced for permitted business-mail use and already carry a cancellation-style marking. The mailer must meet the applicable authorization, class, preparation, documentation and entry requirements. Additional postage can still be due through the approved payment method.
Nonprofit stamps require nonprofit authorization
A nonprofit-looking stamp does not grant nonprofit prices. The organization must receive USPS authorization for the eligible nonprofit category and use the permit and entry procedures associated with that mailing. A vendor, designer or printer cannot substitute for postal approval.
Before buying or using the stamps
- Confirm the eligible mail class and mailing purpose.
- Work with the Post Office or business-mail entry office tied to the permit.
- Confirm nonprofit authorization when seeking nonprofit prices.
- Obtain the correct stamp denomination and understand how the remaining postage is paid.
- Prepare, sort, document and bundle the mail as required.
- Deposit it at the authorized location rather than treating it as ordinary stamped retail mail.
Printed value versus total postage
Precanceled issues can show a small denomination or a service inscription because they operate inside a commercial-mail accounting process. The visible amount alone does not state the total postage paid for every piece. Current rates, minimum quantities and preparation standards must be checked for the actual mailing.
