Commemorative stamps honor a subject or event, while definitive stamps are produced for ongoing ordinary postal use. Both can pay postage according to their valid value. “Commemorative” does not automatically mean scarce, limited or investment-grade.

Commemorative stamps
A commemorative issue usually focuses on a person, event, place or cultural subject and is offered for a defined issue period. It remains usable as postage when valid. Issue format and production facts must come from the exact USPS record.
Definitive stamps
Definitives are intended to support recurring mailing needs and may remain in use longer, appear in multiple formats or use enduring symbols. Long availability does not make every definitive common in every variety.
Collecting without investment claims
- Document the issue and format
- Preserve condition and original pane context
- Use actual comparable sales for the same variety
- Distinguish face value from market value
- Do not infer scarcity from a popular subject or “limited edition” seller phrase
