Grade the actual item
Condition includes gum, centering, perforations, cancellation, tears, thins, repairs and other faults. A price for a certified high-grade example cannot be applied to an ordinary copy.
Use completed evidence
Compare completed sales for the same issue, variety and condition. Record the auction or marketplace, sale date, buyer premium and other fees; an asking price is not a sale.
Know when to seek expertise
High claimed values and uncertain varieties require qualified philatelic examination or certification. Keep postal face value, dealer offer and collector-market value separate.
