Before selling stamps, separate usable unused postage from collectible material, make a basic inventory, and choose a selling channel based on likely value, collection size, fees and the time you can spend.
First decide what you have
| Material | Key questions | Likely next step |
|---|---|---|
| Unused U.S. postage | Is it genuine, uncancelled and still usable for postage? | Compare face value with a realistic resale offer |
| Used stamps | Are issue, condition, cancellation and scarcity identified? | Organize before seeking a collector-market opinion |
| Albums or inherited collection | Is the arrangement, provenance or specialist grouping meaningful? | Keep intact until reviewed |
| Covers and postal history | Do envelope, route, date and markings form the collectible object? | Do not remove the stamps |
Prepare for an offer
- Photograph album pages, covers and better-looking individual items.
- Record country, approximate date range, used or unused status and obvious damage.
- Preserve old labels, certificates, invoices and the original arrangement.
- Do not clean, regum, trim, tape or separate material to make it look newer.
- For potentially valuable material, obtain more than one qualified opinion.
Compare selling channels
Philatelic dealer
Efficient for a collection that fits the dealer’s specialty. The offer reflects resale risk, labor and inventory costs.
Auction house
Useful for stronger or specialized material with enough value to justify commissions, lotting and waiting time.
Online marketplace
Offers control but requires accurate descriptions, photographs, fees, fulfillment and fraud handling. An asking price is not a completed sale.
Local buyer or club contact
Convenient for review and handoff, but verify identity, terms and payment before transferring material.
Offer and payment safety
- Ask whether the quote is net of commissions, shipping, insurance and appraisal charges.
- Do not pay an unexpected advance fee to release a buyer’s funds.
- Use a written inventory or receipt for material left on consignment.
- Be cautious with pressure to decide before you understand the collection.
