“Local Postal Customer” is an approved simplified address line used in an EDDM workflow; stamping those words on a mailpiece does not pay postage.
Address line and postage indicia are different
| Element | Purpose | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Local Postal Customer wording | Provides the approved simplified recipient line for the route mailing | Does not prove payment |
| EDDM Retail indicia | Shows the required mailing-class and postage marking | Does not replace route preparation or payment |
| PS Form 3587 and route documents | Document the mailing and route quantities | Do not replace the physical mailpiece markings |
| Payment and acceptance | Complete the transaction at the applicable entry point | Are not created by a rubber stamp alone |
Where the EDDM indicia goes
USPS instructions place the EDDM Retail indicia above and to the right of the simplified address area. Use the current approved wording and dimensions, leave the address and postal markings readable, and do not improvise a “POSTAGE PAID” impression.
EDDM preparation sequence
- Choose EDDM Retail or the applicable business-mail-entry workflow.
- Select saturation routes using the current USPS tool.
- Confirm that the finished mailpiece meets the current EDDM dimensions and preparation rules.
- Apply the correct simplified address and separate indicia.
- Count and bundle pieces by route.
- Prepare the required form and route documentation.
- Pay and deposit at the approved location.
Should you buy a rubber stamp?
A rubber stamp may speed repeated address wording, but the impression must remain legible and must not be represented as postal authorization. Buying one does not establish eligibility, pay postage or correct a mailpiece that fails the EDDM rules.

EDDM details are dynamic; verify dimensions, forms, prices and entry instructions for the actual mailing.
