An upside-down postage stamp has sometimes been used as a private or romantic signal, often interpreted as love or affection. The meaning is not universal, is not a USPS rule, and depends on the era, place and people involved.
A letter-writing custom, not postal law
Lists of ‘stamp language’ circulated in popular culture and assigned meanings to a stamp’s position or angle. These codes varied and could be playful, private or invented after the fact. Unless sender and recipient shared the same convention, the orientation alone cannot prove intent.
Will the letter still be delivered?
A stamp placed upside down is not automatically invalid. What matters is that valid, unused postage is affixed securely and the mailpiece otherwise meets postal requirements. Put postage in the upper-right corner and avoid covering the address or processing area.
Do not confuse placement with an inverted printing error
An upside-down stamp on an envelope describes how someone attached it. An invert such as the Inverted Jenny is a production error in which one printed element is upside down relative to another. That is a philatelic variety, not a secret message.
