A presidential portrait is a subject clue, not a complete stamp identification. Record the president, denomination, issue name, date, color, format and cancellation before drawing conclusions about rarity or value.
Where the story begins
George Washington appeared on the 10-cent stamp in the first U.S. federal general issue of July 1, 1847. He has appeared on more U.S. stamps than any other individual, which also means “Washington stamp” can refer to many different issues with very different catalog identities.
Identification worksheet
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Person | Full name; do not rely on resemblance alone | Multiple presidents and allegorical figures may look similar |
| Denomination/service | Printed value, letter, Forever or other service | Separates look-alike issues |
| Issue evidence | Year, series name, inscriptions and format | Connects the item to a catalog record |
| Condition | Unused/used, gum, perforations, centering, faults | Affects collectibility, not postal face value |
| Postal context | Cancellation and complete cover if present | May provide date and route evidence |
Value boundary
A portrait, age or commemorative subject does not by itself establish a premium. Postal value, collector value and a marketplace asking price are separate. Potentially valuable early material should be matched to a recognized catalog and examined by a qualified expert.
Building a focused presidential collection
- Choose a scope: one president, a definitive series, memorial issues or presidents on covers.
- Keep issue records and source links with each item.
- Use archival storage and avoid hinges or adhesives on material you want to preserve.
- Do not describe an incomplete set as a complete presidential issue history.
